1960. She was an arts student, pretty, short dark hair; I was in second year med. She was always walking around with her girlfriend quoting Lucky Jim at each other. I was more interested in jazz than literature...actually, was Kingsley Amis literature? I used to prefer studying in the nice quiet biochem library behind the lovely new Baillieu, but the B was where the girls were, so that's where I went. Normally I saw her in the caf but that day, there she was, wandering around the ground floor stacks. For some reason we decided to go up to the first floor where her books were via the back stairs. She led the way and as we ascended she paused on the stairwell landing and turned to watch me reach her. As I did I slipped my hand under her skirt (we had never even been out, by the way), pulled her towards me and kissed her. We used to call what happened next a "knee-trembler." Hot, furtive, desperate but ultimately unsatisfying, sex. However, it was morning in the crowded library, danger in the light of day, so definitely worth the effort! I don't think we ever did go out or even do it again...I wonder what happened to Dot?
